Drive the scenic route Durban to Cape TownThere are at least three drives considered the scenic route Durban to Cape Town. The two most popular routes are along the coast and through the country (interior). The third route offers a taste of both country and coast. Through the country (interior) Take the N3 out of Durban and head up the hill into the highlands of Harrismith. The Drakensberg will be on your left. Along the way there is a profusion of wonderful places to stop and visit, or rest for the night. If you take the R103 at Hillcrest, (you can get back on the N3 quite easily), you can drive through the picturesque Valley of a Thousand Hills and stop at PheZulu (near Bothas Hill) for a traditional Zulu experience. When you reach the beautiful, pastoral Midlands, take some time (overnighting is even better) to do the wonderful Midlands Meander. If you’re a history fan you may want to do some exploring in the Estcourt; Ladysmith and Harrismith areas as they are interesting historical military sites. The scenic route Durban to Cape Town through Bloemfontein and Beaufort West takes you through the Karoo: arid, unique and unusually beautiful. Get ready for some peace and quiet if you visit here! Traditional Karoo farms are known for their food and hospitality, so stay an evening to break your trip. Be refreshed by the verdant vineyards and orchards of the Cape Winelands after the dryness of the Karoo. The views are quite spectacular as you drive through the impressive mountains. Wine connoisseurs will enjoy kelder (cellar) tours and wine tastings, while teetotallers will enjoy the many other wine farm offerings. When you’ve had your fill of picturesque wine route drives, get back on the N1 and make for Cape Town. Along the coast If you’ve a penchant for undulating green hills and arresting sea views, you’ll relish the drive down the Hibiscus Coast. The N2 from Durban takes you south along the coastline and then inland through the Transkei. Should time not be of the essence, detour to Ramsgate and have a meal at the Waffle House on the Ramsgate Lagoon. When driving in the Transkei, watch for animals as they tend to wander on the roads! From East London you’ll drive to Grahamstown, home to the beautiful Rhodes University and full of interesting nooks, crannies and history. Port Elizabeth is a holiday destination within itself, but it also serves as the start of the renowned Garden Route, a magnificent drive from PE to Heidelberg. Don’t miss the Tsitsikamma National Park. Places along Garden Route offer hiking, birding, swimming and boating in abundance. As the N2 continues towards Cape Town, keep your camera ready for the incredible views you’ll see. Country to coast If you want to take the scenic route Durban to Cape Town and you’d like a bit of country and coast; drive up from Durban to Bloemfontein, down to East London and then to Port Elizabeth for the start of the Garden Route. The Bloemfontein-East London (N6) part of this drive will take you from the Free State Highlands, through the Karoo plains and down to the coastal dunes of PE. Enjoy Bushman paintings, historical sites, hiking trails, and game viewing along the way.
