Driving in Port Elizabeth

Driving in Port Elizabeth is different to driving in your average metropolis. This “20 minute city” is unfamiliar with gridlocks and traffic issues. Port Elizabeth has a reputation for being “the Friendly City”, “The Windy City”, and also the watersports hub of South Africa. Although it can get windy, PE (Port Elizabeth) is rated as having one of the top four coastal city climates in the world. Temperatures for both weather and water are pleasant all year round, which means that watersports are enjoyed and available on a daily basis.

If you’re a fan of the beach and beach activities, you may want to plan to do quite a bit of driving in Port Elizabeth. There is a considerable selection of great beaches to choose from, each with a different character which attracts complementary visitors. There is a variety of beaches suited to swimming, surfing, sailing, bodyboarding, diving, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sandboarding, among other sports. There are also beaches for walkers, horse riders and hang gliders who launch from the dunes. Humewood, Hobie and Kings beaches are all proud to be Blue Flag beaches. Blue Flag status is awarded to beaches that are clean, safe and have good quality facilities for beachgoers. It is an internationally recognised award.

PE and its outlying surrounds are host to some wonderful game and nature reserves. The renowned Addo Elelphant National Park is a must-do day trip, and well worth a stay-over if you have time. Addo is known for its Big Seven; the Big Five plus whales and the Great White Shark. The Baviaanskloof Wilderness area is home to a wealth of biodiversity and is a lovely place to see. It’s even been short listed for World Heritage Site status. Birdwatchers will be keen to spend time at the Cape Recife Nature Reserve with its bird hide and excellent bird watching. The Chelsea Conservancy, Sardinia Bay Nature Reserve and Sylvic Nature Reserve and Bushy Park offer scenic walking trails and beautiful views.

If a beachy, active holiday is what you’re after, Port Elizabeth is an ideal getaway spot. Trail walking, hiking and horse riding are easily available and beach and watersports are accessible in plenty. If you want to try something new and exciting like sandboarding or hang gliding off the dunes, there is opportunity for that too. For those who prefer eating out, shopping and cultural pursuits there is the Greenacres shopping centre, the Boardwalk Casino Complex, and the wonderful St. Georges Park. Attend the “art in the park” market (a monthly event), browse the two art galleries, or take in a cricket match. History enthusiasts may be keen to do the 5km Donkin Trail, a fascinating walk following in the footsteps of the 1820 British settlers who arrived in PE. Another place to explore is Central Hill, full of settler history and monuments.

A trip to PE is not complete without a tour of the The Bayworld Museum Complex. Visit the museum with its natural and cultural history and check out some of the interesting exhibits. The Oceanarium is popular for its dolphin and seal shows and the Snake Park for its variety of reptiles, including some rare species. Browse through a 19th century Settler cottage at the 7 Castle Street Museum.

Driving in Port Elizabeth is a great way to get around the city and discover all it has to offer. Don’t miss the wonderful opportunities available! Whether in the city itself or exploring its neighbouring attractions, relax and enjoy the drive.
