Road Map from Johannesburg to Durban

If you’re keen for a driving holiday, get hold of a road map from Johannesburg to Durban and fill up with petrol! The N3 is the most direct route, but it has dozens of connecting roads which lead off into other exciting directions along the way. This busy freeway from Joburg to Durban is a toll road with five toll plazas at Heidelberg, Villiers, Tugela, Mooi River and Marianhill. You can avoid some of these if you use the alternate route, the R103. It’s a good idea to use cash for the tolls as only specific cards are accepted.

Johannesburg to Harrismith is uneventful unless you stop to visit Heidelberg and the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. Heidelberg has some good examples of Victorian architecture and a motor museum housed in a 19th century railway station. The Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve offers great walking trails and a 60km driving route. You’ll pass the towns of Villiers and Warden, (see if you can spot the Lesotho mountains in the distance) and further down the highway you’ll reach Harrismith, halfway between Johannesburg and Durban.

The road map from Johannesburg to Durban includes an assortment of routes into both the Battlefields and the renowned Drakensberg mountains from Harrismith onwards. It is intriguing and worthwhile to spend some time touring the Battlefields in the Harrismith-Ladysmith-Estcourt area. Official tours can be arranged. Don’t miss the Siege museum or the memorials. Stand on the battlefields of old (one of which is in the Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve) where the British and the Boers clashed.

A Berg vacation is a wonderful escape for rest-seekers and the adventurous alike. If “taking a breather” is the kind of holiday you’re after, indulge in first-class accommodation, good food, spa pleasures and leisurely walks. If action and activity is more your style, treat yourself to rock climbing, abseiling, hiking, horse riding, or hot air ballooning. The majority of the Berg resorts have plenty of sports facilities, activities and games for guests to make use of. Golfing, fishing and hiking are well supported in terms of opportunities.

Should you be in quest of a little “wild” in your holiday, there are a number of game and nature reserves between Harrismith and Durban. These include:

Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve
Weenen Nature Reserve
Wagendrift Nature Reserve
Thukhela Biosphere
Albert Falls Dam Nature Reserve
Midmar Nature Reserve
Phezulu Safari Park

among many others. These reserves offer a profusion of activities such as trail walking, hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, paddling, boating, swimming, game viewing and more.

Further down the N3 you’ll find Mooi River and the beautiful Natal Midlands. A Johannesburg-Durban road trip would not be complete without a detour on the R103 to do the Midlands Meander. The Midlands Meander is a route leading to a “community” of people and places who offer accommodation, food, crafts and handmade products, etc. Stop at a farm stall for “padkos” (food for a roadtrip), browse for locally made jewellery, and visit the lavender farm for wonderful farm-made home and beauty treats. Go and see the woodturner at work, or try out the locally made hammocks in Curry’s Post.

Your road map from Johannesburg to Durban  has a few more diversions left! Turn off at Camperdown and spend some time at Tala Game Reserve. Enjoy one of their delicious meals. Potter around the Heritage Market in Hillcrest for foodie treats, unusual clothing and curios.  From there, wend your way down the M13 and back onto the N3. You’ll find Durban just down the hill
